Media theory

The task:
Write 3 reports, supported with images and diagrams that supports your study using the 3 headings for each report.

Part 1: Media Language, Analysis: Go on-line, read and write your own descriptions: 500 words each.
1. What is Genre?
Media products is classified into categories or genre. genre comes from a french word which means type or class which describes what is can be put into. Media genres appears with a medium such as horror and all other types of genre in a film or the television for the situation comedy.

A genre can be recognised by its distinguishing features which can be associated with certain styles of what the content will be for example a horror film will need a certain setting, a certain way the characters are introduced and certain lighting and music which all relate to all the scenes and media text can blur genre boundaries for a certain amount of time as people can tell what type on genre it can be.

audiences can recolonise these features and expect certain things in the film. For example at the beginning of a horror movie a natural or science disaster happens causing world wide panic, a few characters work together maybe dying on the way, saving people and at the end stop whatever happened and save the world from the disaster or to stop the monster then celebrate their success at the end which is the base of that certain genre.

However all producers market the texts according to the genre because of what the audience prefers can and has been identified as the audience enjoy the text in that genre as they watch that genre the most but genre is not static as it always changes over time resulting in hybrid or sub genres which is a sub category of a genre and can be applied to literature, music, films, video games and other forms of art. genres were created to classify artistic works into categories and a sub genre breaks down the categories into defined subjects

A film genre is a motion picture category based on similarities in either the emotional response to the film (namely, tragic, comic, etc.) or the narrative elements. Most theories of film genre are borrowed from the literary world. The most basic genres include fiction and documentaries, from which subgenres have emerged, such as docudrama. Other subgenres include the courtroom and trial-focused drama known as the legal drama which show how the law of the film can work as it can be different to real life. Types of fiction which may seem unrelated can also be combined to form hybrid subgenres, such as the melding of horror and comedy such as in the Shaun of the Dead. Other popular combinations are the romantic comedy and the action comedy film. When genres are combined they can create some good movies and make it funny and scary as people can find certain parts of them of it really funny or really scary or the same part funny and scary as in comedy and horror movies there's always a funny part and a scary part at different times to get reactions from the viewer and when horror and comedy collided in one part peoples reaction become mixed.

2. What is Representation?

Media representation are ways the media portrays certain groups, communities, experience, ideas or topics from a particular ideological value perspective.
A few ways representation can misrepresent a community to create diversity by stereotyping and typecasting which are concepts that are close related as though assumptions of how a certain person and character is supposed to be due to their racial, ethnic, gender, sexual or religious identity which can be seen as harmless and positive can have an effect on society as it will be unrealistic and negative expectations and assumptions of certain cultures of that area. As in western movies Arabs have roles of a terrorist or an oil hungry boss which can show to people who don't know the area it was filmed in can believe the film is correct about the that area and country its in. The actor who plays that part is assigned the same role as it was a success with that role in the past because they look like the stereotypical person from the area which can show all people who look like the person on the role is a stereotypical person which will incorrect.

What’s the importance of representation?
representation is very important in a multitude of ways as strong and positive representations can help and fight and break down the stereotypes that can be detrimental to other individuals and limiting society to stop being stereotypical towards people like Asians who are seen as being in gangs and doing illegal work which they don't in real life. But representation can be used as a tool to boost self confidence such as when the individual see someone like them in a strong role and positions which can aspire the viewer to try and get to that role. Also it increases self love when someone sees someone who look and acts just like them in media and they can compare if they act the same which can inspire and motivate people who thinks they were previously thought they were unable to do certain things. But representation can also open new opportunities an easy example is the lack of acting opportunities available to non white actors simply because most scripts insist on only using white characters which make it harder for some non white actors as they are limited to some genres but more opportunities can lead to richer stories and media while using new voices and perspectives of new characters no one would expect that.
Better representation can be positive for those who are already commonly represented and people can benefit from learning about different experiences about other people and the notion of what being normal which isn't this one of the fundamental purposes of art.
Better representation can give opportunities to people who have acted before to get more roles which they can be in as they’ve done it before but more representation causes misrepresentation to other cultures as they are not fully shown in the actual way as tribes are shown to be aggressive to all characters in movies or some help characters to get better.
3. What is Narrative?
The study of narrative explores all the different ways that media can texts that tell the entire story to everyone who watches and create stories themselves so they can tell and/or show people what they came up with so then they can see if their narrative can get them famous in the future so they can represent others to do the roles required. The narrative is strongly linked to the target audience and gives a purpose for the texts being shown to them so they can understand the entire narrative in media for example in tv as all people is the target audience as everyone can see how easy it is how easy the narrative is shown to them but to the people showing the narrative can be hard to do so they can show the viewer which viewers will not really get as they do not make the narrative being shown and how hard it is to create and to make sure that it actually makes some sense to people.
Convections are used to tell the story that are dependent on the medium. In films for example the condensing of the time which is very important and may be shown though the different production techniques such as camera fades, field of view, camera angle, focus of the shot, special effects which might need to be used and the lighting of the set of filming the location or the studio which can help the narrative when it is shown in its media form. Whereas in all magazine articles narrative convection include productions techniques such as the layout and the style of the writing which is important to people who read the magazines as they are used to the layout which is shown and as magazines add different things people learn narratives can change at any time or stay the same as the viewer can decide they don’t like the type of narrative they have looked at or just start to get interested in that narrative and will continue looking for films, music and books with the same type of narrative.
A study of narratives are dependent on an understanding of close techniques which people can understand which then everyone will know what the narrative is about and what potential it has to show them as they watch or read then they can understand how the narrative will work and be shown to them as they can try to make their own narrative and create their own and how other people
Understanding the narrative is helpful across with a range of achievement standards of media.
Propps theory of narrative include the villain who the hero has to defeat, the hero who has to defeat the villain and stop the anti-protagonist, the donor provides a certain object which helps the hero, the helper which aid the helper on the quest, the women in distress, the person who's offering award to save the women in distress, the dispatcher and the antihero which is the anti-protagonist and tries to stop the hero any way possible.

Part two: Key methods of preparing for media production you need to use: 400 words each
1. What is a target Audience? Describe how useful it is in creating an effective and useful product.
Target audience is the viewers the company is trying impress with a certain style and age group as younger people will like animations as they draw attention to people and the older people get the target audience changes to newer and more realistic films. Media producers use an audience for research, so they know what they like and ensure the research they use in production to help them to get the point across to their target audience and make sure the target audience knows what they are watching, and it draws their attention to actually watch it and continue watching what the media uses.

Media producers categorise their target audience though demographic profiles as they categories them by age, gender, income, education and occupation which make it easier for producers to understand where and how they can show the target audience in that category like income they make the film look appealing to people with low or high income. Age comes into it as people as they get older they like different types of media as people get from animation into drama, fiction and sci-fi as they interest people of all ages as they are easier to understand and know they like a type of genre which relates to their target audience.

2. What are Research Channels?: Describe different Methods of Investigation to support ideas development (Primary and secondary). List and describe at least 10.

Radio- radios can give of information of what is happening in the area and can give information of how and when it happened and how people can avoid it or find more information about that subject in other sources, they can find around them.

TV- the tv gives information like the news so then if something interests someone they can go on the website and read what has been put down and eventually research the subject even more so they can understand it more and then they can listen to what has happened live (example Australian fires)

Newspapers- newspapers can aid in peoples research as they show facts and statistics which can support the headline as it helps with all and people can check older newspapers to see if the event has happened before in the previous century so they can back up their research they have created.
Internet- the internet can help with peoples research the most as its online and easily accessible to everyone who can get online
Books- book provide information and research already recorded and can be used to help any new research on that subject and provide facts and statistics which were recorded at that time which were useful for the researcher at that time and can help modern research by already giving the facts and can be altered if the facts were wrong
Films- films help as people watch certain genres which can help them knows how to do it professionally with friends and know how the target audience could respond to their home-made movie
Music- music research can help the researcher which music effects people the most and is most watched by a range of target audiences and how it effects the mind of the person listening so they will be understanding the music genre
Local people-local people might have different information to the internet as they might know the area better and knows the area's history and can tell certain important places in the area which are historically accurate and certain facts can be told to the person who's writing or recording the information for their research
Family- family can know more about certain subjects your researching as they have learned about it or researched it before and know the facts about what you could research
YouTube- YouTube is useful to research as people have created videos on the subject and provide pictures and found footage and present footage if they have been there

3. What is the process we can use to create good useful effective ideas for a final solution (The triangle). Draw up and describe how it works.

4. Write up how you used research to support your idea and to create your target audience profile for both the BBC and Youtube documentary. Identify the sources you used and say why they were useful in developing the idea and say if they changes or modified the target audience you originally wrote about.
